October 30, 1838, Livingston County Regulators and other volunteers met at Breckenridge, Missouri and then rode to Hawn’s Mill a Mormon settlement on Shoal Creek, where they brutally attacked the Saints, killing 15 men and 2 small boys, 14 of whom were hastily interred in a partially completed well on the site. The mill stone believed to be from Hawn’s Mill is displayed as a memorial to those that were killed and wounded at the Breckenridge City Park, located about 6 miles north of Hawn’s Mill.
